Unfortunately, there are many things that can harm the smile and affect the oral health. These things are called mouth or dental enemies. The most dangerous enemies to the mouth include plaque and acid. These substances can harm your teeth and gums in more ways than you might realize. To help you know more about these enemies, our dentist, Dr. Chad Gubler, is happy to share some information with you.
Plaque
Plaque can cause tooth decay and gum disease, which are the two most serious dental issues in the world today. The plaque that causes tooth decay thrives off the sugar and carbohydrates you eat and create an oral acid in your mouth. That acid attacks the tooth enamel, softens it, and makes a cavity. The plaque that causes gum disease turns into a substance called tartar. Tartar is very toxic and it irritates and infects the gums. If it’s not removed, it could create pockets of infection and even deteriorate the jaw bone.
It’s important to avoid plaque growth on your smile by brushing twice a day, flossing and rinsing daily, and visiting your dentist every six months for a dental cleaning and exam.
Acid
Acid also attacks the tooth enamel and promotes dental issues. This acid comes from the acidic foods and drinks you consume. If you have excessive amounts of acid exposure, the tooth enamel is attacked and softened. Then, it’s vulnerable to tooth decay and tooth injury, like enamel chips and breaks.
It’s important to avoid this dental enemy by limiting your acidic food and beverage intake.
